Accessibility
A ballot reference has to work for every voter — including voters using a screen reader, a keyboard, a small phone, or a slow connection. We build to WCAG 2.2 AA and test the parts of the site most likely to be used before an election.
What we commit to
- Text contrast that meets or exceeds AA on every page.
- Every image has meaningful alt text or is marked decorative.
- Every interactive control is reachable and operable with a keyboard.
- Focus is always visible.
- Form errors are announced and tied to the field that caused them.
- Pages remain readable at 200% zoom.
- Pages work without JavaScript for reading; some interactive parts do require it.
- We test on a real screen reader before releases.
Known limitations
- Interactive district maps rely on JavaScript.
- PDFs we link to are produced by state and county officials and may not meet our accessibility standard. We link them anyway because they are the official record.
Report a problem
If any part of the site is hard to use with assistive technology, please tell us. Write to us on the contact page and describe the page, the tool you were using, and what went wrong. We treat accessibility bugs as priority fixes.
