What ID do I need to vote in Tennessee?

What counts as valid ID

Tennessee law requires voters to show a photo ID at the polling place. Acceptable IDs include:

• A Tennessee driver license with your photo.
• A photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (a free option is available).
• A U.S. passport.
• A photo ID issued by a Tennessee state or federal agency, including military ID.
• A Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo.

Your ID does not have to be current — but it does have to be issued by the federal government or the State of Tennessee.

What is not accepted

Student IDs are not accepted, including IDs from Tennessee public colleges and universities. City and county IDs are also not accepted for voting.

If you do not bring an accepted ID

You can still vote. You will be given a provisional ballot. To have it counted, you must return to the election commission with an accepted photo ID within two business days of the election.

Getting a free photo ID

If you do not have a photo ID, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security can issue one for free specifically for voting purposes. Bring proof of citizenship and Tennessee residency.
