Oversees the public school system. Selects and evaluates the director of schools, approves the school system budget, sets district policy, and makes decisions about facilities.
The school board decides how to spend the school budget. It does not decide how big the school budget is.
Davidson County: districts 2, 4, 6, and 8 are on the 2026 ballot; the board is staggered.
What this office cannot do alone
- Does NOT control all school funding. The county commission (or Metro Council) sets the total, and Tennessee state funding and state education law shape the rest.
- Cannot hire or fire individual teachers — that is the director of schools and administrators.
- Cannot override state education law.
On the 2026 ballot
