A U.S. senator serves in Washington and represents all of Tennessee. A Tennessee state senator serves in Nashville and represents one state legislative district. These offices are often confused and have very different powers.
Tennessee voters do not directly elect a lieutenant governor. The Tennessee Senate elects its Speaker, and that Speaker also holds the title of lieutenant governor.
Tennessee Senate terms are staggered — about half the seats are elected every two years. Only odd-numbered districts are on the 2026 ballot. Even-numbered districts are up in 2028.
