Three ways to vote
Vote by mail
If you're 60 or older, Tennessee lets you vote by mail without another reason. Request by October 24. Ballots must be returned BY MAIL — Tennessee does not allow drop-off. Residents of nursing homes cannot vote by mail; ask the commission about the alternative.
Vote early, in person
October 14 – October 29. Shorter lines, any early-voting site in your county.
Vote on Election Day
Tuesday, November 3. Your assigned polling place, 7am to 7pm. Bring photo ID.

Meet the roles
Each one with what it cannot do.
Metro Council Member
One of 40 people who write Nashville's local laws and pass the Metro budget.
Cannot: Cannot pass a law alone — it takes a majority of the 40-member Council.
School Board Member
Oversees the public school system. Selects and evaluates the director of schools and approves the school system budget.
Cannot: Does NOT control all school funding. The county commission (or Metro Council) sets the total.
Sheriff
The county's chief law enforcement officer. In Davidson County the core, exclusive duty is running the jail.
Cannot: Does not report to the county mayor. Separately elected, accountable directly to voters.
Register of Deeds
The county's custodian of legal documents — deeds, mortgages and liens on property.
Cannot: Cannot decide property disputes — that is a court.
Tennessee State Representative
One of 99 people who write Tennessee's laws. Every seat, every two years.
Cannot: Cannot pass a law alone. One of 99, plus the Senate, plus the Governor.
Criminal Court Clerk
Keeps and manages the official records of the criminal courts in Davidson County.
Cannot: Does NOT decide cases. The clerk keeps the record; the judge decides.
